you will get some information about proper diet for improving stage 4 kidney damage.

1. Protein restiction for stage 4 kidney damage

For a patient with stage 4 kidney damage, protein is restricted. The kidneys take part in most of protein metabolism in the body. Nitrogen is the by-product of this process, which has quite a taxing effect on the kidneys. A protein intake of 0.6g per kilogram of body weight is beneficial for glomerular filtration.

2. Fluid restriction diet

In order to avoid fluid retention, edema and kidney workload, fluids should be avoided. This should be on strict monitoring becaues as the kidneys progress into further damage, urine volume decreases and fluid retention occurs. This condition will cause edema, shortness of breath and even high blood pressure.

3. Calories and overall health

Calories should be monitored in order to achieve not only optimal kidney health but overall health as well. In protein restriction itself, a patient on strict renal diet can suffer from weight loss due to decrease supply of calories from protein. Adding more protein when this condition occurs may risk kidney health. One of the best ways to avoid weight loss on renal diet is to adjust carbohydrate and fat intake. Calories intake will be increased and weight loss is avoided to a certain extent.

4. Potassium, phosphorus and sodium limitation

Potassium should be limited from 3000-2000mg daily. Potassium may accumulate when not restricted in stage 4 kidney damage and may cause fatal results like heart attack if not strictly monitored.

Phosphorus should be limited from 1000mg to 800mg. Phosphorus may accumulate in stage 4 kidney damage and cause a cascading effect of poor calcium absorption. This can cause parathyroid hormone to affect the release of calcium and phosphorus from bones.
