Can kidney disease patients eat litchi? Knowing what we to eat and avoid is very necessary when kidneys fail to function properly, because a proper diet management contributes to the recovery. Litchi is a very favorable fruit with good taste. Well, can we eat litchi when our kidneys fail to work properly?

Litchi is also commonly called Lychee which is a very fragrant fruit. It is usually available in the summer and regular consumption of it is health-beneficial:

1. Litchi has a high level of vitamin C in it and meets about 86% of the body’s daily requirement of this vitamin.

2. Litchi is a great anti-oxidant owing to its abundant polyphenols.

3. Litchi is a great source of protein which is the basic of life.

4. Litchi is high water content and full of energy.

In our body, our kidneys not only play the role of cleansing blood, but also helps to regulate blood pressure, maintain electrolyte balance, secrete hormone, maintain fluid balance and acid-base balance. Therefore, when our kidneys fail to function properly, we will face lots of health issues like high blood pressure and electrolyte imbalance. To get these problems controlled well, we need to take medical treatment and meanwhile be very careful about what we eat.

For an individual with kidney disease, he is not suggested to eat too much litchi, because:

1. Litchi is rich in protein and high protein intake will further damage kidney.

2. Litchi is high in sugar, and high sugar intake will add extra burden on kidney, which is very bad for kidney.

3. Eating too much litchi will increase risk for inflammation which is the major cause of kidney damage in some cases.

4. Litchi is high in phosphorus and with kidney problem, we are easily to develop hyperphosphatemia, so we need to limit phosphorus intake.

Lichi is a very favorable fruit. However, with damaged kidney, we need to eat less of it, so as to avoid worsening of illness condition.
